Christine Lavin
biography

CHRISTINE LAVIN, singer-songwriter-entertainer, is a multi-award winning performer whose one of a kind theatre-concert has become a fixture in popular culture. She will mark her 25 years of performing and recording with a new concert, My 25th Anniversary Concert: What Was I (ever!) Thinking? and a new book. Her autobiography Cold Pizza for Breakfast: A MEM-wha?? is being published by Tell Me Press and scheduled for release in winter 2010. Her 20th solo album also commemorating her 25th Anniversary is also entitled Cold Pizza for Breakfast and will be released this fall on Yellow Tail Records. Christine’s smart, funny, and incisive songs have been featured in several Off Broadway musicals including A ... My Name Is Still Alice. Her awards include: a NAIRD Award, two New York Music Awards, seven ASCAP Composer Awards, The Kate Wolf Memorial Award and a Backstage Bistro Award for New York City Singer-Songwriter of the Year. She was listed in the TOP 100 Most Influential Artists of the Last 15 Years by Performing Songwriter Magazine. Along with her twenty solo records, Christine has also produced eight compilations showcasing other singer-songwriters and was a founding member of the Four Bitchin’ Babes recording and performing collective between 1990 and 1997. Her songs continue to be performed and recorded by numerous artists. Broadway star Sutton Foster includes Christine’s song Air Conditioner on her new cd entitled Wish. She performs nearly 52 weeks a year in a touring schedule that crisscrosses America, Canada and countries abroad. She has been featured on ABC-TV’s Good Morning America, NBC-TV’s The Today Show as well as CBS, CNN and NPR. Her 19th album entitled I Don’t Make This Stuff Up... I Just Make It Rhyme is a cogent title for an album that
showcases the drama and quirks of human nature that never cease to amaze her. She is the producer of One Meat Ball, a tasty musical compendium, in which both she and fellow singer-songwriters — including Jeff Daniels and the international megastar, Dame Enda — serve up their favorite dishes in song. The actual recipes are reprinted along with artist commentary in a unique 96 page Cookbooklet-CD package. Christine hosts as well as creates musical programs for xm satellite radio’s The Village where her program SLIPPED DISCS features albums of both fellow artists and aspiring musicians which are slipped to her backstage at her concerts. She is the recurring guest host at Jim Caruso’s CAST PARTY at the famed Birdland in the heart of NYC’s theater district. Christine is a published writer. Her upcoming book Cold Pizza for Breakfast: My Mem-Wha? is slated for publication in early 2010 by Tell Me Press. Her song lyric The Dakota is reprinted along with her recollections of the day Lennon died in Memories of John Lennon edited and compiled by Yoko Ono and published by Harper Collins. Contributors include: singers Carly Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Mick Jagger, and Donovan Leitch; filmmaker, Albert Maysles; actor, Dennis Hopper, and photographer, Annie Liebowitz. The anthology Knit Lit, Too (Random House) contains her account of knitting on the road (and sometimes on-stage). In Remember Me When I Am Gone (Adler Press), Christine and other notables such as Larry King write their own obituaries. She is the author of the award winning children’s book The Amoeba Hop (Puddle Jump Press) which uses her song of the same name as text. Illustrated by artist Betsy Franco Feeney, it was cited as the Outstanding Book of the Year by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She and Franco Feeney are now collaborating on their new book for young readers, The Runaway Christmas Tree. Christine’s many essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Delta Sky Magazine, The St. Petersburg Times, Inside Arts, Performing Songwriter and other periodicals. A woman who loves to multitask, Christine maintains serious obsessions with knitting, cooking, philosophy and her cultural heroine, Dame Edna.

“Lavin is as captivating an artist in solo performance as there is today!”
BILLBOARD

“Lavin knows how to keep her audience guessing, thinking and laughing at the same time.”
The Washington Post

Christine Lavin’s smart and funny take on contemporary life and foible make for a one-of-a-kind concert. As a songwriter she brings the shrewd insight and wit of a laser-sharp humor columnist together with a novelist’s eye for evocative details. Her songs are the soundtrack of American life: its people (“Strangers Talk to Me”), relationships (“What Was I Thinking?”), peeves (“Wind Chimes”), food and romance (“French Toast Bread Pudding”), romance again! (“Stop Sobbing He’s / She’ An Idiot”), life’s injustices (“Attractive Stupid People”) and pop culture (Ha Ha Ha Ha Tsk Tsk Shhh), an unscripted Lavin moment during a New York City premiere screening of a red hot feature film.

While she moves easily to poignant realism The Kind of Love You Never Recover From, Another New York Afternoon or The Bends, it is clear that audiences come to her concerts wanting to laugh. She never disappoints.

Abundantly clever and unabashedly fond of a good laugh, she is fearless; opening her show to the audience in a way that ensures every concert is a one-off. Her music and her spontaneity are unequivocal departures from today’s overly choreographed numbers and amped-up lyrics. Passing out recipes or goodie bags for people whose birthdays falls during the holidays, drafting audience members onstage to join her for certain numbers and then improvising brilliant song ripostes as follow up, her stage persona is almost that of an Aunty Mame. The lady in question is the bane of the family who may lower their eyes at her antics except everyone else can’t get enough of her truth and panache!

Christine’s autobiography Cold Pizza for Breakfast: A MEM-wha?? is due out in early 2010 with Tell Me Press. The book release coincides with her new concert — My 25th Anniversary Concert (What Was I ever! Thinking?) — which reprises some of her signature hits while introducing her latest.
